Ronda

Amazing Guides. Enjoy the perfect destination with an Official Guide - Ronda, Spain

Ronda is one of the oldest cities in Spain. Its origins date back to the Neolithic period, according to archaeological discoveries made in its old town. However, the presence of man in these lands is much earlier, which makes the environment of the city as impressive as the city itself: the Cueva de la Pileta, a reference of rock art, and the dolmens of Chopo or Encinas Borrachas testify to this.

In this period Acinipo and Ronda were born, whose heyday will be in Roman times, the first, and medieval the second. Very close to each other, you can not miss the remains of the Roman site of Acinipo, with emblematic remains such as the theater.

Once Acinipo disappeared, after the convulsive period of the fall of the Roman Empire, the center of attention will be directed towards Ronda, which, although being a very reduced nucleus during the first Middle Ages, will be since then the protagonist of all the historical vicissitudes that took place in this territory.

Of these, the one that stands out for its transcendence and for the cultural legacy that it has left us and that is still perceptible in many of its manifestations (urbanism, gastronomy, traditions, cultivation systems, etc), was the Islamic period.

It is at this time when Ronda is configured and consolidated as a city, becoming the capital of one of the Kuras (Provinces) in which al-Andalus was divided (that of Takurunna) and even become an independent kingdom (the so-called Taifa kingdoms) after the dismantling of the Caliphate of Cordoba.

But the most significant role, and for which it is best known, will come with the Nasrid kingdom of Granada, since its proximity to the territories conquered by the Castilians will be erected, both the city and the region, in border enclave of special importance.

But it will be the eighteenth century that will mark the definitive guidelines of the role that Ronda will have in the context of Andalusia. It is in this period when the most significant and emblematic monuments of the aristocracy of that time and of the present Ronda were built: the New Bridge and the Bullring.

From then on, and throughout the 19th century, the romantic image of the city was forged, as well as that of the Serranía, in which the world of banditry and bullfighting made a deep impression on many distinguished travelers.
