When Frank Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum appeared along the waterfront of a provincial city in northern Spain, a place previously ignored by the tourism industry, a new phenomenon in tourism was born: architectural tourism, which describes the niche of travelers who choose destinations for their famous modern architectural works.
A related term, “The Bilbao Effect”, was also born out of this, as the city’s economy flourished with the influx of visitors who came to Bilbao not only to enjoy a city with an important gastronomy and an old town of medieval origin, but also to visit this famous contemporary art museum, which dazzles with its innovative modern architecture and extensive collection.
Bilbao fascinates visitors with its wide variety of tourist attractions. From its beautiful historic center with the ruins that formed the medieval town that gave birth to Bilbao, its Plaza Nueva where you can taste its famous “pintxos”, the Cathedral of Santiego and the municipal library of Bidebarrieta, through the famous Arriaga theater, the Church of San Antón of the fifteenth century Gothic style and the Mercado de La Ribera, considered the largest covered market in Europe with more than 10,000m2.
